[Free Software] Alternative for CorelDraw

Are you tired of spending your money to buy new version of CorelDraw? But you still have many .cdr file in your harddisk and confuse how to open them with another program? Now, i’ll give you an alternative for CorelDraw. This application can open and convert any .cdr file and then you can edit it as you like. What a great free software.

Maybe you will guess that it’s Inkscape, but it isn’t. It’s named sK1 Editor. sK1 is an open source vector graphics editor similar to CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, or Freehand. First of all sK1 is oriented for PostScript processing.

Below is the major sK1 Editor features:

  • CMYK colorspace support
  • CMYK support in Postscript
  • Cairo-based engine
  • Color managment
  • Universal CDR importer (7-X3 versions)
  • Modern Ttk based (former Tile widgets) user interface

Actually, sK1 editor is a fork of Sketch 0.6.15. It was a result of day-by-day patching of Sketch in an attempt to migrate their printing firm to free software. Sketch development seemed to be stalled already, so when the Sketch/Skencil maintainers decided to switch to Gtk+ widgetset, they were forced to fork. They migrated to Ttk (former Tile widgetset), added CMYK support, color management, and Cairo-based engine. And don’t forget, it can’t edit .cdr files, sK1 just import them and save it in different file format.

Okay, enough about introduction. Now, i’ll tell you about how to install this program in Ubuntu. There is 2 ways to install sK1 to your Ubuntu system. First, you can download its source from here and then you can follow my tutorial about installing program in linux from source. Or you can download its deb package for Ubuntu 7.10 and use this command below to install sK1 Editor.

apt-get install tcl-8.5 tk-8.5 python-imaging python-imaging-tk python-liblcms
dpkg -i sk1_0.9.0-rev335-1ubuntu10_i386.deb

Now, you can save your money for another use rather than spend it to buy CorelDraw.
