Long Live Open Source Software !!

The sixth and final alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 8.10 (codename Intrepid Ibex), which is scheduled for release in late October this year, was made available a few hours ago and now i will show you some cool features of Intrepid Ibex. This version comes with Firefox 3.0.2, Samba 3.2 and GNOME 2.24 Beta 2, etc.

For the Intrepid Ibex, the development team will prepare a cool desktop, great performance, and will work on mostly any computer (be it a high-end workstation or an old and dusty Pentium III machine, unlike Vista that won’t work on low-end computer). Another major feature planned for Intrepid Ibex is the ability to be connected to the Internet via wireless connections wherever you go: “We want you to be able to move from the office, to the train, and home, staying connected all the way” said Mark Shuttleworth. So you won’t miss your Intrepid Ibex when you’re on vacation, i think.

Now let’s take look at new features that was provided by Intrepid Ibex :

  • Mount archive !, yes, now you can mount your archive like a filesystem. So you can copy or cut some files inside archive to another directory. With a simple right click on the archive, you can select the ‘Open with “Archive Mounter”‘ option and here you go dude. (look at first picture)
  • Automatic shutdown in 60 seconds when you hit the shutdown button. Actually, i don’t think this is a great feature.
  • GNOME version 2.23.92
  • Private Directory guys! Now, you can prevent your “private file” from your girlfriend..(look at second picture)
  • Extract files from archive have a new look. Now, it gives more information than before.
  • New super duper cool effect !!! Look at the third picture below and you’ll know what i mean.

With all cool features above, i can’t wait for final releases of Intrepid Ibex in October 30th, 2008. I hope new Linux Mint uses Intrepid Ibex as their base. Because my laptop is using Mint.
